Driver Arrested in Longboat Key for Tampered License Plate and Expired Registration
Longboat Key, FL — A critical traffic stop on April 25 at 2:44 a.m. led to an arrest after police discovered a vehicle carrying an altered license plate and expired registration, raising alarms over vehicle fraud and potential criminal activity.
Officer Troyer was on patrol along the 3300 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive when he stopped a black GMC Yukon for having an expired license plate sticker. The driver had previously received a warning for the same violation, prompting closer scrutiny.
Upon investigation, Officer Troyer learned the passenger confirmed the vehicle was registered in Florida but had a registration expired since February 2026. The vehicle, however, displayed a Tennessee license plate with a validation sticker dated July 2025. Crucially, the number “5” on the sticker was altered with a Sharpie to appear as a “6,” signaling deliberate tampering.
Further checks revealed the Tennessee plate was registered to a different individual, deepening suspicion of intentional plate misuse. Lawrence County authorities conducted a thorough background query via FCIC/NCIC systems and secured the plate as evidence.
The driver was immediately placed under arrest and transported to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Jail. After his Miranda rights were read, he opted not to speak with detectives. Meanwhile, Officer Mathis assisted the passenger, who lacked a valid driver’s license, in arranging towing services for the vehicle.
