Former Henrico Officer Awaits Sentencing in Shocking Child Abuse Case
A Chesterfield judge is set to decide Thursday the jail time for Bhalmiki Maharaj, a former Henrico County police officer who pleaded guilty to abusing his two elementary-age sons and allowing his fiancée to brutally assault them.
During the intense sentencing hearing, prosecutors played multiple videos recorded inside the couple’s home, clearly showing the older child forced to do squat jumps while Maharaj’s fiancée, Barbie Paul, berated, kicked, slapped, and punched him. Maharaj was present and did nothing to stop her, effectively enabling the abuse.
The disturbing footage visibly broke Maharaj down. He began sobbing uncontrollably as the videos played, prompting the judge to pause proceedings to allow him to regain composure.
Fiancée Already Sentenced to Over 132 Years
Paul has already been sentenced by a different judge to more than 132 years behind bars for her role in the horrific abuse of the children. Maharaj’s sentencing is now the critical remaining legal step in this unfolding case.
The charges Maharaj pleaded guilty to include child abuse and neglect, assault and battery, malicious wounding, and child cruelty. His case has sent shockwaves through the Henrico and Chesterfield communities, highlighting failures to protect vulnerable children from domestic violence.
Police and prosecutors stress the importance of justice being served promptly to send a clear message that child abuse will not be tolerated, especially when those entrusted with public safety commit such acts.
What’s Next in the Case?
The sentencing decision expected this Thursday will determine Maharaj’s punishment, potentially setting a strong precedent within Virginia and beyond. As the case gains national attention, it shines a harsh light on child protection protocols and accountability for abusers in law enforcement ranks.
Advocates are urging Kentucky and U.S. authorities to review similar cases closely and ensure swift action to protect children in vulnerable situations.
This case is a stark reminder of the urgent need for communities everywhere to be vigilant against domestic abuse, regardless of the abuser’s profession or status.
