Freshman Alexandre Giguère Claims MWC Honors After 3 HRs

UPDATE: Freshman catcher Alexandre Giguère of the Cougars has just been named Freshman of the Week for the Mountain West Conference following an explosive performance over the weekend against Texas State University. Giguère’s exceptional feat included three home runs and five RBIs, propelling him into the spotlight just as the Cougars gear up for their next series.

This accolade comes off the heels of Giguère’s remarkable weekend, where he batted an impressive .363 and boasted a staggering 1.182 slugging percentage. The Canadian, originally from Quebec, had previously seen limited action this season, only participating in three games and starting once, where he recorded a mere .250 average with just one hit.

In the first game against Texas State, Giguère contributed to the Cougars’ offense with a powerful home run in the fifth inning, marking his emergence as a key player. The excitement escalated in game two when he doubled his tally by hitting two home runs in just four innings. His first was a dramatic three-run homer in the fourth, followed by a solo shot in the eighth, leading the Cougars to a 9-7 victory—their only win of the weekend series.

In his final game of the series, Giguère had a quieter showing, going 1-for-4 but still managed to score in the seventh inning, which showcased his ability to contribute even when the spotlight was not on him. Unfortunately, the Cougars fell short in this game, losing 4-3 and ultimately dropping the series 1-3 against the Bobcats.

Giguère’s standout weekend not only solidified his place as a crucial asset to the team but also positioned him as a leading contender for a starting role moving forward. Currently, he leads the Cougars with three home runs and an impressive 1.375 OPS. Additionally, he ranks second in batting average at .333, fifth in RBIs with six, and fifth in runs scored with five—all accomplished in just six games and 15 at-bats.

As the Cougars prepare to take the diamond again, they will begin their Mountain West play against San Diego State University from March 13 to March 15 in San Diego. Fans and analysts alike will be eager to see if Giguère can maintain his momentum and continue to lead the team in their quest for victory in the upcoming games. Stay tuned for further updates as this exciting season unfolds!
