John Mayer Pays Tribute to Bob Weir Following His Passing

John Mayer honored his late bandmate, Bob Weir, with a heartfelt tribute on social media following Weir’s death at the age of 78 on January 10, 2024. Mayer, who collaborated with Weir in the band Dead & Company, expressed his gratitude for their musical journey together. In a touching post on Instagram, Mayer wrote, “Okay Bob. I’ll do it your way. Fkn’ A… Thanks for letting me ride alongside you. It sure was a pleasure. If you say it’s not the end, then I’ll believe you. I’ll meet you in the music. Come find me anytime.”

Mayer and Weir first joined forces in 2015, marking the beginning of a significant partnership in the music world. Their collaboration took shape after Mayer invited Weir for a studio performance while guest hosting The Late Late Show. This led to the formation of Dead & Company, which enjoyed several successful tours, culminating in a farewell tour that concluded in July 2023.

The band continued to perform at residencies at the Sphere in Las Vegas throughout 2024 and 2025. They came together for a final celebration in August 2025, performing three shows in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, to commemorate the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary. This event featured notable guest performers, including Billy Strings, Trey Anastasio, Grahame Lesh, and Sturgill Simpson.

Weir had previously shared his hopes for the band to continue thriving beyond his lifetime. In an interview with Rolling Stone’s David Fricke in 2016, Weir reflected on a moment during a performance when he envisioned the band’s future. “I had a little flash while we were playing one night,” Weir recalled. “I was 20 feet behind my own head, looking at this and kind of happy with the way the song was shaping up. Suddenly, it was 20 years later. It changed my entire perception of what it is we’re up to.”

The announcement of Weir’s passing came from his family, who described him as having transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. They expressed profound sadness in their statement, noting that Weir had battled cancer courageously but ultimately succumbed to underlying lung issues. The legacy of Bob Weir remains strong, with his contributions to music and his lasting impact on fans and fellow musicians alike.
