UPDATE: A powerful snowstorm has wreaked havoc at John F. Kennedy International Airport, stranding hundreds of travelers as they attempt to return home after the Christmas holiday. The storm, which began affecting the New York City area on December 29, 2023, has led to the cancellation of 158 flights and 204 delays at JFK, according to FlightAware.
Travelers are facing an overnight ordeal, with many left sitting on terminal floors surrounded by luggage and restless children. “I wanted to hang out. I went shopping, and went to Times Square,” said Danniel Sermone, 31, whose flight to Denver was canceled. He has been at the airport for over eight hours with still more to wait.
The snowstorm has prompted state officials to declare a state of emergency across more than half of New York, with forecasts predicting close to a foot of snow in certain areas by Saturday afternoon. Travelers are urged to prepare for worsening conditions as the storm could intensify, dropping snow at rates exceeding two inches per hour.
Frustrations are mounting among international travelers as well. Mara Pimenta, who arrived from São Paulo with her husband and two children, expressed her dismay at the lack of communication from Latam Airlines. “I have been on hold for an hour waiting. I just have a lot of luggage and two children,” she said after her flight was canceled without warning.
The situation is similarly dire for Chaithanya Sing, who was stuck at the airport with her 9-month-old baby after her Air France flight to India was canceled. “It’s like a ghost counter,” she lamented, referring to the empty check-in area.
Nearby airports are also grappling with the severe weather. Newark Liberty International Airport has reported 107 cancellations, and LaGuardia Airport has seen 90 flights scrapped, impacting thousands of travelers.
Officials are urging New Yorkers to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay updated on conditions. “New Yorkers should all prepare — avoid driving if possible and give yourself extra travel time,” said Mayor Eric Adams. He recommended signing up for Notify NYC for real-time updates.
As the snow continues to fall, travelers are advised to remain patient while awaiting information on their flights. The storm’s impact is still unfolding, and those stuck at JFK are looking for answers and assistance as they navigate this unprecedented disruption.
