Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, indicated that both Russia and Ukraine are increasingly inclined to negotiate a peace agreement. In an interview with Germany’s Welt am Sonntag, published on October 22, 2023, Fidan noted that after four years of ongoing conflict, both parties appear more prepared to end hostilities than they were previously.
Fidan stated, “After four years of attritional war, the parties are more prepared to conclude peace than previously.” He emphasized that the prolonged conflict has led to significant human suffering and devastation, prompting both sides to recognize their limits. This shift in perspective, according to Fidan, is crucial for advancing discussions toward a potential peace deal.
Turkey’s position is that Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a readiness to agree to terms for peace, contingent on specific conditions.
