A thirteen-year-old boy is in critical condition following a shark attack at a beach in Sydney, Australia. The incident occurred around 16:20 local time on March 10, 2024, when the boy was reportedly jumping on rocks near Sydney Harbour. Authorities confirmed that a large shark mauled him during the activity.
According to New South Wales Police Superintendent Joseph McNulty, the quick actions of the boy’s friend were instrumental in saving his life. The friend bravely entered the water to assist him, while two other companions helped pull the injured boy back onto the rock platform. McNulty praised their actions, stating, “Those young men are brave under those circumstances, and very confronting injuries for those boys to see. But I suppose that’s mateship.”
Emergency services arrived minutes after the incident. A police boat quickly reached the scene, where officers applied two tourniquets to the boy’s legs to control significant blood loss and began performing CPR as they transported him across the wharf to receive medical attention.
“The boy had lost his pulse. There was a large blood loss, and the double tourniquet stemmed that flow of blood loss yesterday and has contributed to saving his life,” McNulty explained. Witnesses reported that police officers arrived at the wharf “covered in blood.”
NSW Ambulance Inspector Giles Buchanan provided further insights into the medical response, saying, “The medical team would have intubated the boy to take over his breathing for him and continue circulating blood for him, as well as give him a transfusion on the way to the hospital.” He emphasized the precarious nature of the situation, noting, “It was touch and go the entire time.”
After being stabilized, the boy was transferred to a hospital where he underwent surgery overnight. His recovery status remains critical but hopeful.
Local officials are now focused on identifying the species of shark involved in the attack. Speculation suggests it could be a bull shark, which are known to frequent the waters of Sydney Harbour particularly during the summer months.
McNulty elaborated on the environmental conditions that may have contributed to the attack, stating, “The combination of the brackish water, the fresh water, and the actions of the splashing may have made that perfect storm environment for that shark attack.”
As investigations continue, the community remains on alert while officials emphasize the importance of safety in coastal areas.
