Valente, originally from Portugal, lived in a modest apartment building in the Olivais neighborhood of Lisbon during his studies at the Instituto Superior Técnico, one of the country’s top engineering schools. Residents who recalled his time there painted a complex picture of Valente, revealing a young man who was polite yet withdrawn. Maria Margarida Baptista, a neighbor, remembered Valente as a diligent individual during their time working together on administrative tasks for the apartment building. “He was always very diligent with the math and bills,” she said. “Everything in the administration was always very well done.” Despite her fond memories, Baptista was taken aback by the news of Valente’s alleged actions. “I was in shock. José Morgado, a former teacher, recalled how Valente’s parents sought his guidance for their son to participate in Portugal’s physics Olympics. “He wanted to go,” Morgado said. “He ended up winning the national event and went on to compete internationally.”
Despite his impressive academic achievements, many who knew Valente are struggling to reconcile the image of a brilliant student with the recent allegations. Morgado described him as “the perfect student” who was well-liked by teachers and peers alike. “I never met anyone who said Claudio behaved poorly or wasn’t a good student,” he stated. “It was the complete opposite of the image I had of him.”
