A hostage was successfully rescued during a police-involved shooting in Grand Forks on the evening of December 5, 2023. The incident took place in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue North, where law enforcement officers responded after receiving a call from a woman claiming to be holding a man hostage in an apartment.
According to a report from the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office, officers from both the county and the Grand Forks Police Department arrived at the scene and quickly located the apartment unit. They were informed of exigent circumstances that necessitated immediate entry to ensure the safety of the hostage.
Upon entering the apartment, officers observed both the hostage and the suspect. The report indicates that officers perceived an imminent threat, prompting one deputy to discharge his firearm multiple times at the suspect. Fortunately, the hostage remained unharmed during the encounter.
Emergency medical assistance was rendered to the suspect, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. She was then transported to Altru Hospital for treatment. All officers involved in the incident were reported to be unharmed, and the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
As part of the standard procedure in such cases, the deputy who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The ongoing inquiry is being conducted by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, along with the Sheriff’s Office and the Grand Forks Police Department.
