The Atlanta Falcons have confirmed that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will remain on the coaching staff under newly appointed head coach Kevin Stefanski. The announcement was made on Monday, just two days after Stefanski was named to replace Raheem Morris, who was dismissed following a disappointing 8-9 season.
The decision to retain Ulbrich reflects the endorsement of Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who indicated that he would suggest the new coach keep the defensive coordinator but would not enforce the decision. Ulbrich’s defense showed notable improvement during the past season, particularly in the pass rush, which was bolstered by rookie first-round draft picks James Pearce Jr. and Jalon Walker, along with second-year player Brandon Dorlus.
In Ulbrich’s first season as defensive coordinator, the Falcons set a franchise record with 57 sacks, a stark contrast to the previous year when they managed only 31 sacks. Pearce led the team with 10.5 sacks, marking the highest total for a Falcons player since Vic Beasley recorded 15.5 sacks in 2016. Additionally, the 2025 draft class also featured safety Xavier Watts, who achieved five interceptions, and safety Jessie Bates III, who was selected as an All-Pro in 2025.
The retention of Ulbrich is the first significant staff decision made by Stefanski, who was appointed on Saturday night. This selection comes less than two weeks after he was let go by the Cleveland Browns, where he had spent six seasons. During his tenure, he earned the distinction of AP Coach of the Year twice and compiled a record of 45-56.
As he transitions into his new role, Stefanski is expected to recruit a new offensive coordinator and special teams coach. The search for a general manager is also underway, led by newly appointed president of football operations Matt Ryan, the former quarterback for the Falcons.
Stefanski’s hiring marks a pivotal moment for the Falcons franchise as they aim to build on recent defensive improvements while looking for a resurgence in overall team performance. The upcoming off-season will be crucial as the organization seeks to enhance its roster and coaching staff in pursuit of greater success in the National Football League.
