More than $2.5 million has been raised for Ahmed Al Ahmed, the bystander hailed as a hero for his actions during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach. The crowdfunding campaign, launched in the aftermath of the incident, has attracted nearly 43,000 individual donations, including a notable contribution of $99,999 from American billionaire Bill Ackman.
Al Ahmed, who was shot twice while disarming one of the attackers, is currently recovering in hospital. The GoFundMe page dedicated to him emphasizes his selfless bravery, stating, “In a moment of chaos and danger, Ahmed Al Ahmed stepped forward without hesitation.” His actions not only put him at risk but are credited with saving countless lives during a terrifying event that unfolded on December 10, 2023.
The total funds raised for victims and their families have now reached nearly $5 million. Among the notable fundraisers, nearly $780,000 has been collected for the family of 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest of the 15 victims, who was mourned at a funeral service in Woollahra. A separate campaign for Sofia and Boris Gurman, both of whom lost their lives attempting to thwart the attack, has garnered $650,000.
The tragedy unfolded as over 1,000 people gathered at Bondi Beach to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. Alleged terrorists Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, opened fire on the crowd, leading to chaos and panic. Al Ahmed, originally from Syria and the owner of a tobacco shop in Sutherland, was caught in the midst of this violence.
In recognition of Al Ahmed’s bravery, NSW Premier Chris Minns visited him while he recuperated, expressing gratitude on social media. “Ahmed is a real-life hero,” Minns stated. “His incredible bravery no doubt saved countless lives.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also met with Al Ahmed, describing him as a “true Australian hero.” Albanese noted the unanticipated heroism of a man who had simply gone out for coffee with friends. “He decided to take action, and his bravery is an inspiration for all Australians,” he said.
Al Ahmed’s heroism has not gone unnoticed; he is likely to receive a bravery award from Governor-General Sam Mostyn. Mostyn expressed her conviction that his actions warrant formal recognition, and she mentioned that she had spoken with King Charles, who conveyed his gratitude for Al Ahmed’s courageous deeds.
In a statement from his hospital bed, Al Ahmed expressed appreciation for the overwhelming support, saying, “May Allah reward you and grant wellbeing.” His migration lawyer, Sam Issa, revealed that Al Ahmed sustained multiple injuries, including about five bullet wounds, with concerns about the potential loss of his arm.
Despite the pain he is experiencing, Al Ahmed remains humble about his actions. “He did what he was compelled to do as a human being,” Issa remarked. The community’s outpouring of support reflects a collective acknowledgment of the risks Al Ahmed took, as well as the tragic loss of life during an event meant to celebrate unity and joy.
The investigation into the shooting continues, with authorities working to ensure the safety of the community in the wake of this tragic event. Al Ahmed’s story serves as a poignant reminder of courage in the face of terror, as the community rallies to support not only him but all those affected by the violence that unfolded that night.
