A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in Arpora, Goa, has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 25 individuals, including several tourists. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on December 3, 2023, during a busy night at the club, which is known for attracting both locals and visitors.
Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that most of the victims were kitchen staff, alongside three to four tourists who were caught in the chaos. Six others sustained injuries but are reported to be in stable condition. According to local police, the fire was triggered by a gas cylinder explosion, and emergency teams successfully extinguished the blaze shortly after.

Reports indicate that around 100 people were on the dance floor when the fire ignited. In the ensuing panic, many fled towards the kitchen area, where they became trapped along with club employees. The nightclub’s location along the Arpora river backwaters posed significant challenges for firefighting teams, as the narrow entry and exit points forced fire brigades to park their vehicles approximately 400 meters away. This limited access hampered their response time, as detailed by the Press Trust of India.
Local village council member Roshan Redkar noted that authorities had previously issued a demolition notice for the club due to its lack of a government construction permit. However, this order was later rescinded by senior officials. The state government has since initiated an inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and whether fire safety regulations were adequately enforced.
