A man arrested by French authorities earlier this week is believed to be the fourth member of the crew responsible for the theft of France’s crown jewels from the Louvre Museum. According to Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau, the 39-year-old suspect has a criminal record, including six previous convictions, and now faces preliminary charges related to the dramatic heist that occurred on October 19, 2023.
The charges against the suspect include robbery by an organized gang, which carries a potential penalty of up to 15 years in prison, and criminal conspiracy, which could result in a 10-year sentence. While the bulk of the jewels remains missing, the emerald-set imperial crown of Empress Eugénie, which features more than 1,300 diamonds, was later discovered abandoned outside the museum.
