UPDATE: The annual Winter Solstice Celebration is happening this Sunday, December 17, 2023, at the Living Earth Center in Mankato, offering a unique opportunity for community reflection during the busy holiday season. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. on the Good Counsel campus, located at 170 Good Counsel Drive.
Attendees can participate in a guided snowshoe hike, enjoy warmth from big bonfires, and indulge in complimentary refreshments. This free event is designed to celebrate the shortest day of the year and the impending return of light, making it a perfect way to connect with nature and the community.
IMPORTANT: While pre-registration is encouraged, it is not mandatory. For those interested in signing up or seeking more details, email [email protected].
In addition to the solstice festivities, motorists in downtown Mankato should note significant changes to parking regulations. The city is transitioning to a gateless, pay-by-plate system in all main parking ramps by January 1, 2024. Under the new rules, vehicles can park in the ramps for up to two hours free; beyond that, a fee of $3 applies for the remainder of the day. Payment can be made either at pay stations or by scanning QR codes posted throughout the ramp areas. For more information on parking, visit mankatomn.gov/parking or call 507-387-8600.
In an urgent call for community involvement, Blue Earth County is seeking nine members for its newly formed Recycling and Waste Reduction Advisory Committee. This committee aims to enhance public engagement in solid waste programs, including recycling and hazardous waste management. Interested candidates must commit to attending monthly meetings and are encouraged to apply by January 2, 2024, or until all positions are filled. For inquiries, contact Property and Environmental Resources at 507-304-4251 or visit blueearthcountymn.gov/RWRAC.
Additionally, the city of St. Peter is collaborating with the Blue Earth County Hazardous Waste Facility for the Recycle Around the Holidays program. Residents can dispose of unwanted or broken holiday lights for free at the community center and library until January 2, 2024. However, please note that other holiday decorations, extension cords, and electronics are not accepted at these sites.
These events and initiatives highlight the community’s commitment to sustainability and togetherness during the festive season. Don’t miss the chance to participate, whether by celebrating the solstice or contributing to local recycling efforts. Share this news and spread the word!
