BREAKING: In a historic achievement, Brynn Streff has become the first female wrestler from Willmar to qualify for the state tournament. This momentous victory occurred during the Section 8 championships held on Saturday, where the freshman finished as runner-up in the fiercely competitive 100-pound bracket.
Streff’s journey to the state meet began with a tough semifinal match against Natalee Friedrichs from Sauk Centre/Melrose, who ultimately secured the Section 8 title. However, Streff rallied back, defeating Lillian Lane from Thief River Falls to reach the third-place match. She clinched third place with an impressive 14-3 major decision over Anilyse Bundy from Brainerd, which set the stage for one final chance to earn a state spot.
In a decisive true second-place match, Streff showcased her skills with a commanding 6-0 decision victory against Sartell’s Brooklyn Smith. This victory propelled her to the girls’ state tournament, scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. on February 26 at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.
Streff’s achievement not only marks a personal milestone but also paves the way for future female wrestlers in the region, inspiring many young athletes to pursue their dreams in sports traditionally dominated by males.
Meanwhile, fellow Willmar wrestler Maria Perez narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet in the 118-pound category. After losing her opening match to Sartell’s Abigail Swenson, Perez fought back fiercely, winning four consecutive matches, including a third-place bout against Brooklyn Budeau from Sauk Centre/Melrose. However, she faced Swenson again in a rematch for true second place but fell short.
Across other sections, female wrestlers also made headlines. Elizabeth Rademacher from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa secured first place at 130 pounds in Section 5, with a remarkable pin against Morgan Mielke from St. Michael-Albertville in just 2:41. Ava Kiecker from BOLD also clinched first at 124 pounds, while Brooklyn Binsfeld from Paynesville finished second at 100 pounds.
With the state tournament on the horizon, all eyes will be on these talented athletes as they prepare to compete on the grand stage. As the excitement builds, fans and supporters are eager to see how Streff and her fellow competitors will perform in the coming days.
