Whitman County Genealogical and Historical Societies Launch New Home

UPDATE: The Whitman County Genealogical Society and the Whitman County Historical Society have officially opened their new shared space in Pullman, marking a significant development for local history enthusiasts. The public is invited to explore the newly established library and archive resources during an open house on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 525 NE Campus Ave.

This relocation comes as a response to the unexpected closure of the Gladish Community and Cultural Center in September, which displaced several organizations, including these vital nonprofits that have served the community for decades. “We had just two weeks to pack our archives and find a new home,” said Monica Peters, correspondence secretary at the Genealogical Society. This swift transition highlights the urgency and importance of preserving the region’s rich history.

Both organizations are dedicated to connecting the community with its past through research and documentation. While they operate separately, their collaboration ensures a comprehensive approach to historical preservation. “We fill in the gaps of family histories,” Peters explained, noting that their resources provide critical information not available online.

Alex Otero, archivist at the Historical Society, added that their focus encompasses the broader context of Whitman County’s heritage, offering tangible collections that include old publications, maps, and photographs. “There aren’t many places where people can engage with the county’s historical artifacts,” he stated.

The Genealogical Society charges $20 per hour for research assistance, while the Historical Society currently offers its services for free. Both organizations are open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and by appointment.

The transition to this new space represents a new chapter for these societies, which have been foundational to the community since the Historical Society was founded in 1972 and the Genealogical Society was established in 1984. Their previous home at the Gladish had housed their archives since 1987 for the Historical Society and since 1992 for the Genealogical Society, making the move both a logistical challenge and an emotional milestone.

Community members are encouraged to visit the open house and discover the wealth of resources available. “People are eager to learn about their ancestry and feel connected to their community,” Peters emphasized, underscoring the human impact of their work.

For those interested in exploring the past, this new location promises to be a hub for historical research and family connection in Whitman County. Don’t miss the opportunity to engage with local history and support these organizations during their transition.
