UPDATE: The West Torrance girls basketball team secured a decisive 49-38 victory over Village Christian during the opening of the Battle at the Beach Gold Division on December 5, 2023, at Redondo Union High. This win marks a strong start for the Warriors, who aim to return to the CIF-SS playoffs this season.
West Torrance quickly established dominance, jumping to a commanding 14-point lead in the first quarter, fueled by standout performances from freshman Kayla Nayak and sophomore Hailey Igbokwe. Nayak led all scorers with 17 points, including three pivotal 3-pointers, while Igbokwe contributed 9 points and 11 rebounds.
“We started out really well, especially defensively,” said West coach Keith Prendergast. “I knew they would bounce back and make a run, but I’m proud of how we responded and got a good win.” The Warriors’ aggressive start set the tone for the game, allowing them to build a substantial lead that they maintained throughout.
As the game progressed, West Torrance surged ahead with a 22-point lead at halftime, following back-to-back 3-pointers from Nayak and teammate Katie Moore. The momentum shifted momentarily when Village Christian attempted a comeback, narrowing the gap to 15 points late in the third quarter. However, the Warriors regained control, with crucial baskets from Igbokwe and another lay-up from Nayak extending their lead.
“I think we played really hard tonight, especially defensively,” said Igbokwe. “This tournament is important for us to do well in. It gives us a good idea of how things are going to be once we start playing in league.” With the victory, West Torrance aims to build momentum heading into the rest of the tournament, which serves as a crucial preparatory phase for league play.
Nayak echoed the importance of the tournament, stating, “Doing well in this tournament will give us some momentum early in the season, and hopefully, by league, we will be ready so that we can make the playoffs this year. Our goal is to do well in playoffs and hopefully hang a CIF banner.”
The Warriors will continue pool play on Wednesday against Leuzinger, with fans eagerly anticipating another strong performance as West Torrance aims to solidify its playoff aspirations early in the season.
