UPDATE: West Ranch girls’ basketball kicked off their league play with a thrilling 26-20 victory over Golden Valley on December 2, 2025. The game showcased a fierce competition between two standout freshman guards: Mia Vallas of West Ranch and Brighton Blythe of Golden Valley.
The match, held at West Ranch High School, was marked by intense gameplay as Vallas led the Wildcats with an impressive 16 points, including two three-pointers. With this win, West Ranch improves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in league standings.
“We battled the whole game. We played great defense and worked really hard,”
said West Ranch head coach Paul Gross, praising his team’s aggressive performance. “Everyone was playing aggressive and attacking, and I liked it.”
While Golden Valley faced a tough start to the Foothill League, Blythe managed to score 13 points on 6-for-13 shooting, demonstrating her potential despite the loss. The Grizzlies now stand at 4-3 and 0-1 in league play.
In addition to Vallas, the Wildcats saw contributions from seven different players, with freshman Arianna Corona adding 12 points. The collective effort was pivotal, as the Wildcats outscored the Grizzlies in every quarter, showcasing their defensive capabilities.
“We got a great group from one to 12 of girls that just play hard all the time,”
Gross added, reflecting on the team’s depth and resilience. “We just wanted to start out the league strong, and you know it’s a tough league ahead.”
Next, West Ranch will face the Castaic Coyotes on Friday, with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m. as they aim to continue their winning streak. Meanwhile, Golden Valley will regroup after the bye week and return to action against Castaic next Tuesday.
In other Foothill League action, Saugus dominated Castaic with a score of 73-32, led by EvaMarie Rios, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists. Canyon also claimed victory over Hart, winning 56-27, with Darby Dunn scoring 27 points and securing 11 rebounds.
