West Fargo Fire Marshal Dell Sprecher Celebrates 35 Years of Service

UPDATE: Just announced, Dell Sprecher, the dedicated Fire Marshal of the West Fargo Fire Department, is marking an impressive 35 years of service as he continues his essential role in the community. At the recent award banquet, the 65-year-old fire marshal was honored for his longstanding commitment, demonstrating an extraordinary career that spans nearly four decades.

This milestone is significant, especially in a profession where longevity is rare. According to the National Fire Protection Association, only 10% of career firefighters were over the age of 60 in 2022. The average career span for firefighters is typically 25 to 30 years, making Sprecher’s achievement even more remarkable.

Sprecher’s journey began in 1988 when he joined the West Fargo Fire Department, which was then a volunteer organization serving a community of under 5,000 people. Today, he leads a full-time, paid fire department that protects nearly 40,000 residents. Under his leadership, the department has transformed and expanded its capabilities, including the addition of medical response services.

Fire Chief Dan Fuller praised Sprecher’s adaptability and institutional knowledge. “Dell has shown his ability to change and adapt to new ideas in the fire service,” Fuller stated. “Most importantly, he sets the example of embracing change, even in his 35th year of service.”

As Fire Marshal, Sprecher heads the West Fargo Risk Reduction Division, focusing on fire safety compliance, inspections, and community education. His innovative approach has led to a significant reduction in unnecessary 911 calls, with hundreds of calls managed through proactive community engagement.

Sprecher’s leadership style emphasizes empathy and community connection. “He runs the best community risk reduction program we’ve ever had here,” Fuller added, highlighting Sprecher’s commitment to improving the quality of life for vulnerable residents.

Reflecting on his extensive career, Sprecher stated, “If you like what you do, why stop doing it? I gotta get up in the morning and have a purpose.” He has no plans for retirement, opting instead to continue serving the community he loves.

As West Fargo celebrates Sprecher’s legacy, the community can expect ongoing improvements and commitment to public safety from a leader who has made a lasting impact.
