URGENT UPDATE: Valley Assistance Services (VAS) in Green Valley, Arizona, is urgently reshaping its programs in response to a staggering 77% cut in federal funding. This drastic reduction comes at a time of soaring community need, with more residents seeking assistance than ever before.
In a move to tackle the growing support gaps, VAS is pivoting its focus toward job training, financial literacy, and an expanded essentials pantry. Executive Director Chris Erickson emphasizes the urgency: “We see 12 to 15 households per week, including one to three households facing homelessness,” he states. With a waitlist of about 650 individuals, the pressure is mounting.
The shift in VAS’s strategy includes launching new initiatives tailored specifically for vulnerable groups, such as young women and older adults. The organization aims to equip clients with essential skills needed for today’s workforce, especially as federal programs like SNAP now mandate work and training hours for eligibility.
Allie P., Coordinator of the Monetary Assistance Program, highlights the immediate challenges many clients face, particularly older adults returning to work. “A lot of people don’t know how to write a resume or even upload one online,” she explains. “Many still prefer to meet hiring managers in person, but that’s not the reality anymore.”
Despite its long-standing commitment to job and financial education, VAS is now adapting its programs to meet contemporary economic demands. The organization is not just focused on immediate relief but also on fostering long-term stability. “Once we assist someone, the question is: How can we help them in the long term?” asks Allie.
To address immediate needs, VAS has introduced the Community Caring Cupboard, which places blue collection buckets at local businesses to gather essential items often overlooked by traditional food banks, such as soap and toothpaste. Additionally, VAS is expanding its on-site food and supply pantry and enhancing classroom spaces for financial literacy courses.
Erickson underscores the importance of adaptability in meeting the community’s evolving requirements. “Being flexible and really listening to our clients is crucial,” he asserts.
Community members are encouraged to participate actively by donating essential items, volunteering, or learning more about VAS’s programs through their website. The shifts at Valley Assistance Services highlight a critical response to urgent community needs in these challenging times.
