Valencia Vikings Surge to Victory in Heritage Christian Tournament

UPDATE: The Valencia Vikings boys’ basketball team clinched a decisive 63-53 victory over the Agoura Chargers, continuing their impressive start to the season. This win follows a thrilling 70-65 triumph against the Calabasas Coyotes, showcasing the team’s potential as they compete in the Heritage Christian tournament.

Head coach Greg Fontenette praised his team’s performance, highlighting their offensive improvement and tenacity. “We took the momentum from the Heritage game into the Calabasas matchup, and it paid off,” Fontenette stated after the win against Agoura.

Valencia began their tournament run with a nail-biting victory against Heritage Christian, where a last-second shot by Romel McCoy secured the win. Despite the slow offensive start, key players like Noah Trevino and Issac Michel-Zavala found ways to contribute, focusing on defense to maintain competitive pressure.

Fontenette noted, “We couldn’t find our offensive rhythm initially, but our defensive strategy kept us in the game. This foundation is crucial as we look ahead.” In their encounter with Calabasas, the Vikings showcased their scoring prowess with Michel-Zavala leading the charge with 19 points and 6 rebounds, while Steve Irons added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vikings have a young roster, primarily consisting of juniors and only one senior, which Fontenette believes is an advantage for long-term growth. He emphasized the importance of challenging matchups to prepare for the Foothill League, which he considers one of Southern California’s toughest leagues. “Facing fierce competition is key. The players need to be exposed to high-caliber teams if we want to elevate our game,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Valencia is set to face formidable opponents, including Chaminade and Taft, both of whom were Division 1 playoff teams last season. Fontenette believes these games will further prepare the Vikings for the rigors of league play, stating, “I expect us to do great things moving into Foothill League play.”

As the season progresses, Fontenette is focused on instilling the importance of taking it one game at a time. “It’s about stacking good days together,” he said, emphasizing the need for consistency and focus. With this mindset, the Vikings aim for a successful season ahead.

With the tournament still ongoing, the Vikings are set to play against the Pilibos Eagles on Monday, November 27, 2023. Fans are eager to see if Valencia can maintain its winning streak and build on this promising start.
