URGENT UPDATE: A shooting near the prestigious Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach has left two individuals dead, and authorities have arrested a suspect with a troubling criminal history. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on March 13, 2025, in the parking lot of a Walgreens located at 860 N. Florida A1A. St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick confirmed that both victims were shot multiple times and did not reside in St. Johns County.
According to Sheriff Hardwick, the suspect, Christian Joseph Barrios, is a 32-year-old felon on probation with a record of around 27 arrests. Barrios was apprehended hours later in nearby Nassau County. Hardwick described the shooting as stemming from a “domestic violence situation,” although specific details are still under investigation.
Hardwick expressed his frustration over Barrios’ lengthy criminal history, stating, “This thug’s criminal history is embarrassing. It makes me sick to my stomach. Here we are dumping all these resources, and families are gonna mourn two people that were shot and killed in a parking lot over a domestic violence situation.”
Barrios was on supervised release as part of “drug offender probation” for charges related to possession of a controlled substance and methamphetamine, with his probation scheduled to end on August 14, 2027. He had recently been released from prison on July 7, 2025, after serving time for a grand theft auto charge.
The investigation has revealed that Barrios’ alleged girlfriend had previously sought an injunction against him for domestic violence, indicating a history of concerning behavior. This injunction was granted last year and is valid through October 2025. Reports suggest she accused him of serious threats, including using a gun and harassment through social media.
As the investigation unfolds, the community mourns the loss of life in this tragic incident. Sheriff Hardwick’s comments highlight a growing concern about repeat offenders and the impact of domestic violence on families and communities.
