URGENT UPDATE: Southeast Side residents are increasingly alarmed by rising crime rates and a noticeable decline in police presence in their community. A shocking attempted break-in was captured on camera early Sunday morning, igniting calls for greater law enforcement in the area.
At approximately 2:15 a.m. last Sunday, homeowners Harrison and Savana Yount recorded a man lurking in their backyard and knocking on their back window. “I think one of the creepiest things was going back and looking at all of our ring cameras and seeing it all play out,” Savana Yount stated. She quickly called the police after witnessing the unsettling footage.
The chilling video shows the suspect attempting to pull open the Younts’ back door. Minutes after their 911 call, police apprehended the man, who was later reported to be experiencing a mental health crisis, according to the San Antonio Police Department. “My big thing was I didn’t want to confront him and spook him,” Harrison Yount explained. “I wanted the police to be able to get here and get him.”
Residents are expressing growing fear as gunshots have also been reported in the neighborhood. Amber, a neighbor, voiced her concerns, stating, “It’s pretty scary ‘cause you never know what people are intending to do.”
Concerns are mounting as crime maps indicate a troubling trend. Many residents attribute the drop in police visibility to the closure of Kate Schenck Elementary, which previously saw officers patrolling the area regularly. “There has been a lot less officers patrolling the area since the school is no longer there,” one local resident commented.
While the crime wave is not exclusive to the Southeast Side, the community is calling for immediate action to increase police presence. “We know our neighbors, we love the neighborhood,” Savana Yount remarked. “So this was a huge eye opener, kinda one of those just very unexpected things.”
