Tropical Storm Fung-Wong Intensifies, Guam Faces Flood Risks NOW

UPDATE: Tropical Storm Fung-Wong has intensified significantly, prompting urgent warnings for Guam as the island braces for severe flooding and mudslide risks. As of 1 p.m. today, the storm was located approximately 405 miles west-southwest of Guam, moving northwest at 14 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents of Guam should prepare for heavy rainfall, with forecasts predicting 4 to 8 inches of rain through tomorrow, increasing the likelihood of dangerous flooding and mudslides across the region. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch and high surf advisory for Guam and surrounding areas, including Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, until 4 p.m. Friday.

Officials report that Fung-Wong passed within 10 miles north of Fais and 50 miles east of Ulithi in Yap earlier today. This storm is anticipated to further intensify into a typhoon as it approaches the Philippines, where it will be renamed Uwan.

Guam is currently experiencing sustained winds between 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. The hazardous surf conditions are expected to generate waves reaching 9 to 11 feet, posing a high risk of rip currents along the coast. Small craft advisories are in effect for coastal waters, with wind speeds reported at 20 to 25 knots and sea conditions at 10 to 13 feet.

Authorities are urging the public to take immediate precautions:

“Stay up to date with the latest weather information. If driving in heavy rain, be alert for low visibility and slippery roads. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Residents are advised to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, refrain from camping or hiking along streams and rivers, and report any signs of potential landslides to local authorities. Given the steep terrain in certain areas, a high risk of landslides is present.

Stay informed and prepared by following updates from the National Weather Service and Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense through their official websites and social media channels.

As Tropical Storm Fung-Wong moves closer to the Philippines, the situation remains fluid. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and ready for potential emergency measures as the storm evolves.
