UPDATE: Trinity Christian has pulled off an electrifying 27-12 comeback victory against University Christian in the Region 1-1A final, securing their spot in the state semifinals next week. The Conquerors trailed by 12 points before mounting a fierce response that saw them dominate the second half.
In a gripping showdown held at University Christian’s home field on December 1, 2023, Trinity’s defense, led by emergency cornerback Terrell Pinkney, turned the tide in the fourth quarter with two critical interceptions. With both starting cornerbacks injured, Pinkney stepped up, intercepting passes that not only halted UC’s momentum but also sealed the game with a 59-yard touchdown return.
Freshman running back Micah Anderson also shined, scoring a pivotal 46-yard run that gave Trinity a crucial 20-12 lead with just five minutes remaining. “We need to go to state,” Anderson declared, emphasizing the team’s determination to reclaim their championship glory.
Despite facing a barrage of challenges, including injuries and turnovers, Trinity managed to capitalize on UC’s struggles. The Christians had opportunities to pull away, entering Trinity territory a staggering 12 times yet only managing to score 12 points in the second quarter. Their inability to convert on critical downs and a fierce Conquerors defense, which recorded six sacks, proved detrimental.
Trinity’s defense, particularly the performance of Pinkney, who previously played outside linebacker, was instrumental. He successfully covered UC’s top receiver, Amare Mack, while snagging two interceptions that shifted the game’s momentum. His first interception came off reserve quarterback Harrison Leddy, stopping a critical drive. The second interception was a game-icing play, showcasing his instincts and agility.
“Stay deep, don’t get beat,” Pinkney said, reflecting on his game-changing strategy. “I made the play, and I see nothing but green grass.” Coach Dorminey praised Pinkney’s adaptability and skill, noting his potential to play anywhere on the field.
Heading into the state semifinals, Trinity must address key areas for improvement. The team faced significant challenges, including three blocked punts and a mere two conversions out of twelve third-down attempts. “Most of what we did Friday night would get us bounced from the playoffs,” Dorminey warned, highlighting the need for a sharper performance.
The Conquerors are set to find out their next opponent as the final four teams will be re-seeded based on FHSAA points rankings. Given the competitive landscape, it’s likely Trinity will be on the road for their next matchup.
As the excitement builds for the state semifinals, fans are rallying behind Trinity Christian, hoping for a return to the championship stage after their last title run in 2021. With a renewed spirit and determination, the Conquerors are ready to make their mark this December.
