URGENT UPDATE: A man tragically drowned while fishing on the San Mateo County coast Wednesday afternoon, officials confirm. This devastating incident unfolded around 3 p.m. at Bean Hollow State Beach, near Pescadero, as authorities respond to a rising number of similar tragedies in the area.
According to the Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit, the victim was fishing with his wife when he suddenly vanished. The woman reported that they were both wearing waders, and she left briefly to retrieve something from their car. When she returned, her husband was gone.
A bystander quickly spotted the man in the water, and firefighters promptly retrieved him. Despite immediate CPR efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident marks the fourth drowning off the California coast in recent weeks, heightening concerns for safety in the area.
Earlier this month, on November 22, Amanpreet Thind, a 35-year-old U.S. Army specialist from New Jersey, was swept into the ocean at Soberanes Point in Garrapata State Park. A week prior, on November 15, Yuji Hu, a 39-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, and his 7-year-old daughter lost their lives in rough waters off Garrapata State Beach.
In light of these incidents, the National Weather Service issued a “beach hazards” warning for San Mateo County on Wednesday. Forecasts predict breaking waves of 10 to 14 feet, creating dangerous conditions for beachgoers.
As authorities continue to investigate this tragic event, they urge the public to exercise extreme caution while engaging in water activities. The safety of residents and visitors remains a top priority.
