Thousands Rally in Bemidji Against Authoritarianism Today

UPDATE: In a powerful display of civic engagement, approximately 1,500 participants gathered in Bemidji today for the second “No Kings Day of Action” rally, part of a larger movement against rising authoritarianism across the nation. The rally took place at Paul Bunyan Park and along Paul Bunyan Drive, with attendees uniting under a shared commitment to democracy and justice.

This significant event, held on July 15, 2023, was part of a broader series of protests throughout northwest Minnesota, where an estimated 15,000 people filled the streets in cities including Brainerd, Duluth, and Forest Lake. Notably, the rally in Brainerd drew 2,500 participants, marking it as the largest political gathering in the region in recent memory.

Organizers from Indivisible Bemidji emphasized the importance of accountability from local representatives, specifically targeting Rep. Pete Stauber. In a statement, they expressed their concerns over Stauber’s alignment with Donald Trump and extremist policies, urging constituents to demand representation that prioritizes people over power.

“Standing up for democracy shouldn’t be controversial. It should be patriotic,” said Sherry Kloha, a leader from Indivisible Bemidji. The crowd, made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds, showcased their passion through vibrant signage, marching bands, and chants, emphasizing unity and a commitment to the values that define America.

The rallies carry a dual message: while the national “No Kings” campaign calls out threats to democratic institutions, local organizers in Congressional District 8 aim to inspire action against perceived governmental corruption. The energy and resolve displayed by participants today reflect a growing sentiment among citizens who refuse to accept authoritarianism as the norm.

As this movement continues to gain momentum, future events are anticipated, driving home the message that democracy is worth fighting for.

Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops and more rallies are planned in the coming weeks.
