Texas Police Boost DWI Enforcement Amid Holiday Season Surge

UPDATE: Texas law enforcement is ramping up efforts to combat drunken driving during the holiday season, a time notorious for a spike in alcohol-related crashes. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched its urgent “Drive Sober. No Regrets” campaign, which will run through New Year’s Day.

Officials confirm that impaired-driving enforcement will be heightened from December 12 through January 1, coinciding with alarming statistics from last year’s holiday season, where Texas experienced over 2,000 drunken-driving crashes, resulting in 96 fatalities and 201 serious injuries.

The Garland Police Department, alongside several North Texas law enforcement agencies, is increasing DWI patrols using both marked and unmarked units during nighttime hours. Authorities stress the preventable nature of impaired-driving crashes, emphasizing that the consequences can be devastating, both physically and financially.

A first-time DWI conviction in Texas can lead to fines exceeding $17,000, including legal fees and soaring insurance rates. The total financial impact can escalate due to additional expenses such as bail and court-ordered programs.

Officials urge Texans to prioritize safety during this festive time. TxDOT suggests planning for a sober ride before consuming alcohol. The Dallas County DWI Taskforce is also working to promote responsible celebrations, offering English and Spanish-language digital ads featuring QR codes for Lyft discounts of $20 or more to facilitate safe transportation.

As the holiday season unfolds, authorities are calling on residents to act responsibly and make safety a priority. The message is clear: driving under the influence is a choice that can have life-altering consequences.
