UPDATE: The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is urgently investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that unfolded during a standoff in Johnson City on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when deputies from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vandalism report in the 100 block of Jarrett Buck Loop Road.
Upon arrival, law enforcement encountered a man armed with a gun who subsequently barricaded himself inside the residence. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, deputies initially attempted to persuade the man to surrender using chemical agents and other non-lethal methods.
As tensions escalated, the man fired shots at the deputies and even targeted a law enforcement drone, ultimately destroying it. In a further attempt to coax him out, deputies employed a fire department water hose. However, during this critical moment, deputies returned fire, striking the man.
He was transported to a local hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Remarkably, no law enforcement officers were injured in the exchange.
The TBI is currently conducting a thorough investigation to establish the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. This includes collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Findings from this investigation will be shared with the district attorney general for review.
As details continue to emerge, officials emphasize the importance of transparency in the investigation. The community is urged to stay informed as more information becomes available.
This incident has raised significant concern among local residents and has sparked discussions about law enforcement protocols during high-stress situations. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
