Soquel Goalie Rafael Suarez-Abraham Named SCCAL MVP in 2025

UPDATE: In a stunning recognition, Soquel High’s Rafael Suarez-Abraham has just been named the 2025 SCCAL MVP, marking a rare achievement for a goalie in boys water polo. This announcement comes after an exceptional season where the junior standout led the Knights to a league title and a berth in the CCS Open Division playoffs.

Suarez-Abraham, standing at an impressive 6 feet 4 inches, averaged 8.5 saves per match, demonstrating extraordinary skill and determination throughout the season. In total, he made 238 saves across 28 games, contributing to the Knights’ overall record of 23-6 and a perfect 4-0 in league play.

Knights coach Ryan Chapatte, who was also honored as the SCCAL Coach of the Year, praised Suarez-Abraham’s talent, stating, “He blocks the shots he’s supposed to and he blocks a lot he shouldn’t.” His performance in critical matches against top teams like Sacred Heart Prep and Campolindo underlined his importance to the team, as he notably stopped two penalty shots in a crucial game.

The season culminated with the Knights advancing to the semifinals of the CCS Open Division, reserved for the top eight teams, and qualifying for the CIF Division I NorCal Regional playoffs. Chapatte emphasized the impact Suarez-Abraham had in keeping the team competitive in high-pressure situations.

Suarez-Abraham isn’t alone in his achievements; his brother, Gabe Suarez-Abraham, also earned a spot on the All-SCCAL first team. Together with senior utility player Stryder Stelck, who led the Knights with 81 goals this season, they formed a formidable squad. Gabe contributed 50 goals and a team-high 57 assists, showcasing the depth of talent within the Soquel roster.

Other top performers included senior attacker Hayden Johnson and junior goalie Laird Bowser from Santa Cruz, both of whom played vital roles in their team’s success, helping the Cardinals secure a second-place finish in the SCCAL and a playoff spot.

As the water polo community celebrates these achievements, the emotional impact of these recognitions is palpable. The recognition of a goalie as MVP highlights the critical role they play in team dynamics, often overshadowed by high-scoring attackers. This moment serves as an inspiration not only for aspiring athletes but also for fans who appreciate the artistry and skill involved in goalkeeping.

As the season transitions into playoffs, all eyes will be on Suarez-Abraham and the Knights as they aim for further glory in the CIF Division I NorCal Regional playoffs. Fans are eager to see if this MVP recognition will propel them to new heights in the postseason.
