Solano County Celebrates 25 Years of Literacy Support at Luncheon

UPDATE: The 25th Annual Solano County Authors Luncheon is underway, drawing community leaders, authors, and supporters to celebrate literacy initiatives. The event, hosted by the Solano Library Foundation, is currently taking place on Sunday, October 15, 2023, and aims to raise funds for vital literacy programs throughout the county.

Guests are enjoying sparkling mimosas and a catered lunch while engaging in lively conversations. Attendees are browsing silent and live auction tables, shopping for books, and securing personal signings with featured authors. The atmosphere is filled with inspiration and generosity as the community rallies behind literacy.

Foundation Board President Ravi Shakar addressed the audience, emphasizing the significance of the luncheon in fueling programs that promote literacy for all ages. “We truly appreciate your participation in this event,” he stated. “Our work and success depend on your generosity and support.”

The highlight of the event is Mychal Threets, former Solano County librarian and host of the rebooted Reading Rainbow series. Threets received a standing ovation after delivering an emotional keynote speech centered on his recently released picture book, I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy.

Threets shared his personal journey, revealing a struggle with depression two years ago that nearly led to his suicide. “I was dying two years ago,” he told the audience, emphasizing his gratitude for being alive and present at the event. His powerful message of resilience resonated deeply, urging continued support for libraries and literacy programs, which he described as “lifelines” for community members seeking hope and belonging.

Additionally, Dr. Jeff Gaborko, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente, spoke about the critical role of reading in health and development. He encouraged parents to instill a love of reading from an early age, highlighting that “one of the most consistent traits among healthy adults is having a high school diploma. Literacy is key to that success.”

The luncheon also featured local authors, including:
Dr. Genea S. Brice, Vallejo’s first Poet Laureate
Dr. June Gillam, award-winning crime fiction writer
Dr. Gary Matsumura, retired obstetrician and author of Adventures in Obstetrics

As the event draws to a close, Ravi Shakar reiterated the importance of community support for literacy programs, underscoring their impact on lives across Solano County. “This is especially important now more than ever,” he urged attendees.

With the event still ongoing, the Solano County Authors Luncheon continues to inspire and mobilize the community in support of literacy, ensuring that the legacy of reading and learning thrives in the region. Stay tuned for more updates on this pivotal gathering.
