Saugerties Village Urgently Considers $1.1 Million Fire Truck Purchase

UPDATE: Saugerties village officials are urgently considering the purchase of a $1.1 million fire truck to replace a 23-year-old vehicle that poses significant safety risks. The Village Board met on December 1, 2023, where Fire Chief Chris Mason detailed critical issues with the current truck, highlighting an immediate need for action.

The current fire truck, manufactured by the now-defunct American LaFrance, is plagued by serious mechanical problems. Chief Mason reported that the vehicle suffers from air leaks that could jeopardize the brakes and air-operated systems. “If we don’t have air, it’s going to basically not let us go anywhere, or could cause the brakes to fail,” Mason stated during the meeting.

In addition to air system failures, the truck’s generator, essential for powering electric tools and lights, is increasingly unreliable. “Sometimes the generator on the truck stops working on us, and there are parts that I don’t think are available for that,” Mason added, emphasizing the pressing need for reliable equipment.

The current vehicle’s fuel tank is rusting, leading to further uncertainty about fuel levels. “The fuel gauge … we’re not sure sometimes if it’s correct,” Mason explained. These persistent issues have raised concerns among firefighters regarding their safety and operational readiness.

The last fire truck was purchased in 2015 for approximately $600,000, but officials attribute the new truck’s price increase to elevated safety standards and tariffs impacting manufacturing costs. “The longer we wait to go ahead with this, the more expensive the truck’s going to be,” Mason warned.

Mayor Bill Murphy echoed these concerns, noting, “The tariffs were a big factor, and we don’t know how it’s going to play out over the next three or four years. That’s the scary part.” Board members are currently evaluating how delaying the purchase could affect the village’s fire rating, which is crucial for local insurance rates.

As discussions continue, the urgency of securing a new fire truck is palpable. With safety and community protection at stake, the Village Board is expected to make a decision soon. This situation remains fluid, and residents are encouraged to stay informed as officials weigh their options.

The outcome of this decision will not only impact the Saugerties Fire Department but also the safety and insurance costs for the entire community. Stay tuned for further developments as this situation unfolds.
