BREAKING: The San Pedro boys basketball team pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Palos Verdes 69-61 in overtime at the Wiseburn Da Vinci Tournament on December 4, 2023. Trailing by 12 points at one point, the Pirates showcased remarkable resilience in their season opener.
In a thrilling finish, San Pedro surged back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Palos Verdes 20-10 to tie the game. “We had to come together offensively, knowing our strengths, and we played harder on defense,” said San Pedro’s star player, Ricky Alonso, who tallied 21 points—with 15 of those coming in the crucial fourth quarter and overtime.
The overtime period was intense. Palos Verdes took a slim 58-57 lead after free throws from Luke Dalis, but San Pedro quickly answered with a decisive 6-0 run to take control at 63-58. Palos Verdes’ Max Cui hit a late three-pointer, narrowing the score to 63-61, but Alonso sealed the game with six consecutive free throws, including two awarded for an intentional foul.
Chris Morgan contributed significantly with 15 points, while Elias Redlew added 14 points. Cui led Palos Verdes with an impressive 28 points, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory.
Alonso reflected on the team’s early struggles, noting, “Guys were putting their head down.” However, as the game progressed, he stated, “Things then started going our way, we started making shots and making a run.”
