UPDATE: A significant surge in holiday travel is underway in San Antonio as officials at San Antonio International Airport confirm that the busy Thanksgiving travel rush began on Saturday, November 22, and is expected to continue through Monday, December 1.
Airport spokeswoman Ana Flores stated, “We’re expecting anywhere from 250,000 to 350,000 travelers throughout the ten-day period.” The peak days are projected to be the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday following it, making it crucial for travelers to plan accordingly.
As families and friends prepare to reunite for the holiday, Flores advises arriving at the airport at least two hours early due to anticipated crowds. She also emphasizes the importance of staying connected with airlines for updates, especially with potential inclement weather affecting flights nationwide.
In a broader context, the American Automobile Association (AAA) reports nearly 6 million people will travel within Texas this Thanksgiving, marking a 1% increase from last year and a 4% rise since the pandemic in 2019. The vast majority—over 5 million—will choose to travel by car, while around 328,000 will take to the skies, reflecting a 1% increase from last year and a notable 12% increase since 2019.
Travelers opting for alternative transportation methods, including buses, trains, and boats, will number around 140,000, showcasing an 8% increase over last year and a remarkable 27% increase compared to 2019.
The holiday travel rush brings with it excitement and anticipation, but also the need for careful planning. As families hit the roads and skies, the spirit of Thanksgiving is palpable, making this a crucial time for community engagement and support.
