Sacramento Man Convicted of Attempted Murder in Family Attack

URGENT UPDATE: A Sacramento court has just convicted Hamdi Bazyan of multiple charges, including attempted murder and animal cruelty, following a brutal attack on his parents and their family cat on December 26, 2021. This shocking verdict was delivered on Thursday after harrowing testimony outlined the violent domestic incident.

The District Attorney’s Office confirmed that a jury found Bazyan guilty of two counts of attempted murder, one count of animal cruelty, two counts of false imprisonment, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The jury also substantiated allegations of causing great bodily injury and personal use of a knife, as reported by Deputy District Attorney Alexandra James from the Elder Abuse Unit.

The horrific chain of events commenced when Bazyan’s erratic behavior prompted his family to call the police. After the officers left, Bazyan armed himself with three large knives, locking his parents in their bedroom. He ruthlessly assaulted them, using both his fists and a cane. The violence escalated dramatically when he turned his rage on the family cat, stabbing her a staggering nine times and attempting to asphyxiate her.

In a desperate struggle, Bazyan stabbed his mother in the torso, while his father sustained multiple stab wounds trying to protect his wife. The bravery of Bazyan’s mother was crucial; she managed to escape to a neighbor’s home to call for help. Upon hearing the approaching sirens, Bazyan fled but was later apprehended near the American River bridge.

Both of Bazyan’s parents survived the attack, thanks to life-saving aid after his mother’s harrowing escape. Remarkably, the family cat also survived the ordeal, highlighting the chilling nature of the incident.

As Bazyan awaits sentencing, he faces a significant prison term for his crimes. The District Attorney’s Office is expected to provide further updates on the sentencing timeline. This case underscores the urgent need for discussions around domestic violence and mental health interventions.
