BREAKING NEWS: Rev. Dr. Robert W. Blaney, a prominent theologian and advocate for social justice, has passed away at his home in Santa Cruz, California, on November 3, 2025. He was 94 years old. His death marks the loss of a significant figure in both the religious and academic communities.
Blaney’s journey began with studies in Mexico, Geneva, and Berlin, culminating in a Master of Divinity and a Doctorate in Theology from Boston University School of Theology. He launched his ministry in 1958 in Southern California and served notably as pastor at the Brentwood Methodist Church and the Los Feliz Methodist Church in Los Angeles, where he became known for his progressive views and commitment to social issues.
For three decades, Blaney shaped young minds as a professor in the Religious Studies Department at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. His courses on Social Ethics, Biomedical Ethics, and Human Sexuality were instrumental in fostering critical thought among students. He also led numerous educational tours to Europe, focusing on pivotal topics such as Christianity and Communism during a transformative era just before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Known for his unwavering advocacy for marginalized communities, Blaney supported initiatives for farmworkers, the LGBTQ community, and other oppressed minorities. He played a vital role in establishing the Council of Bishops’ Scholarship Program alongside Bishop Talbert and was actively involved in various church committees dedicated to higher education and social concerns.
After retiring in 1996, Blaney and his wife, Laurel, who he married in 1962, moved to Santa Cruz. He continued his ministry at the Aptos United Methodist Church and coordinated ecumenical retreats for retired clergy. Blaney is remembered not only for his theological contributions but also for his deep commitment to community service.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Laurel, their daughters Martha and Joy, and grandchildren David, Elizabeth, and Isabella. The family is inviting friends and community members to honor his legacy at a memorial service on December 27, 2025, at 11 AM at the Aptos United Methodist Church.
This loss is felt deeply in the community, as Blaney’s passion for justice and education touched countless lives. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
