URGENT UPDATE: A Portland man has been charged with making alarming threats against law enforcement officers and their families, following a series of violent online posts. John Paul Cupp, aged 45, faces federal charges after his menacing behavior escalated dramatically, culminating in a confrontation outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility on October 14, 2025.
According to FBI reports, Cupp unleashed a barrage of threats, declaring he would kill officers and sexually assault their wives. This shocking behavior was not isolated; it triggered ongoing investigations into his online activity, where he continued to share his violent rhetoric. On November 3, 2025, Cupp posted a video reiterating threats against federal agents and their families, followed by additional posts ten days later, intensifying concern from authorities.
Federal officials have described Cupp as “a prolific producer of online content,” frequently disseminating aggressive and extremist messages, including antisemitic threats and calls for violence against the United States. Such alarming patterns have prompted the FBI to intensify its efforts in combating rising extremist threats across the nation.
FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the seriousness of these threats, stating, “If you threaten to kill law enforcement officers or harm their families, you will face the full weight of the federal government.” He reassured the public that the FBI is committed to using every available investigative tool to identify and apprehend individuals engaging in violent rhetoric.
Similarly, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon Scott E. Bradford reinforced the message that violent threats against law enforcement will not be tolerated. “We will continue to prosecute criminal threats of violence to the fullest extent of the law,” Bradford stated.
Acting FBI Portland Special Agent in Charge Matt Torres highlighted the detrimental impact of such threats on public safety. “Attempts to intimidate those sworn to protect the American people degrade efforts to keep all of us safe,” he said, affirming the agency’s resolve to confront violence and intimidation head-on.
Cupp remains in federal custody as legal proceedings unfold. Authorities have yet to announce a court date for his next appearance, leaving the community on alert as they await further developments.
This case highlights an urgent need for vigilance against extremist behavior and the importance of protecting those who serve and protect society. As the situation evolves, updates will be provided to keep the public informed.
