URGENT UPDATE: In a lighthearted incident that has captured hearts online, Peabody Police successfully escorted two dairy cows back to their home after they wandered unsupervised down Buxton Lane on January 24. The cows, who escaped from Dunajski Dairy, sparked a delightful rescue mission that has gone viral.
Peabody Police Officer Will DeRoo took on the unique challenge, employing his animal-handling skills to lead the two escapees back home. “Once I saw them, I got out of the car and just kind of did what I do with my animals when they don’t listen. I just call and make weird noises until they follow me,” DeRoo shared. His playful efforts have now earned him the affectionate nickname, “Officer DeMoo.”
The police department shared a video of the amusing rescue, showing DeRoo making kissing sounds to coax the cows back. The charming clip quickly went viral, drawing attention from friends, family, and many social media users. “Everyone’s been seeing me on the news. My mom’s super happy, which makes me happy,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the incident, DeRoo highlighted two important lessons learned. First, he emphasized, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” His fellow officers assisted him during the rescue, although they were not featured in the viral clip. Secondly, he advised caution, stating, “Don’t pet the cows as much as you want to. They are pretty unpredictable, and I don’t want to go out injured.”
DeRoo described the experience as a “good time” and noted that it was his first encounter with such a situation. “In the cold, you don’t want to be outside for too long, but something like that makes the shift more fun and lightens the moo-d,” he added.
This incident not only highlights the fun and unpredictable nature of police work but also showcases the community’s affection for their local law enforcement. The video has become a source of joy and laughter, reminding everyone of the lighter side of life—even in unexpected circumstances.
As the story continues to spread, it serves as a reminder of the importance of community engagement and the genuine connections that can form between local officers and residents. Stay tuned for more updates on this delightful story that has brought smiles to so many faces.
