UPDATE: A San Ramon police officer was injured and two suspects were arrested late Sunday night following a dramatic police chase involving multiple patrol cars. The incident unfolded when police received information that suspects linked to a string of auto burglaries were returning to the scene of a crime in San Ramon, California.
At approximately 10:30 PM, officers attempted to apprehend four individuals connected to stolen vehicles. As the suspects fled, they rammed into four police cars, injuring an officer whose leg was pinned between a door and its frame during the chaotic escape. Witnesses described the scene as startling, with a broken fire hydrant shooting thousands of gallons of water into the air.
According to Lt. Leysy Pelayo of the San Ramon Police Department, the chase began when officers identified the suspects returning to an area where a stolen vehicle had already been abandoned. “The four subjects fled in the vehicle,” Pelayo stated, emphasizing that the ongoing investigation targets a network of vehicle thefts affecting the region.
Police quickly apprehended two of the suspects, while the search continues for the remaining two. They now face multiple charges, including hit and run, possession of stolen property, and vehicle burglary. “We’re being proactive to ensure we identify and apprehend all individuals involved,” Pelayo added.
The incident has rattled residents, with one neighbor describing how they heard sirens and a crash before witnessing a fire hydrant erupting into the night sky. “I looked outside and this fire hydrant was just blasting in the air,” said local resident Adam Bieneman.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the suspects or the ongoing investigation to come forward. This incident highlights the rising concerns over auto thefts in the East Bay, prompting local law enforcement to enhance their efforts in combating these crimes.
As the situation develops, the San Ramon Police Department remains committed to ensuring community safety and recovering stolen vehicles. Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds.
