UPDATE: Bishop O’Dowd has just clinched the CIF 5-AA NorCal title in a thrilling finish against Chico, winning 23-20 on Friday night. In a dramatic showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats, O’Dowd’s defense sealed the victory with a crucial fourth-down sack in the final 90 seconds.
This hard-fought victory marks a significant moment for O’Dowd, who traveled nearly three hours from Oakland to face Chico. The win not only secures the regional championship but also sets the stage for a potential state title next week.
Junior running back Lamar Ellis was a standout performer, scoring two touchdowns and showcasing his electric speed. His 17-yard run in the first quarter gave the Dragons an early lead, despite a blocked PAT. The game swung back and forth as Chico responded with a touchdown from quarterback John Bernardez, putting them ahead 7-6.
O’Dowd regained the lead with a field goal just before halftime, ending the second quarter at 9-7. The teams exchanged blows in the second half, with Chico briefly taking the lead before O’Dowd quickly answered back with a stunning 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Trevor Erickson, making it 16-14.
The Dragons’ defense shone in critical moments, including a fumble recovery at the 1-yard line that kept O’Dowd in front. Ellis delivered a jaw-dropping run, weaving through defenders to extend the lead to 23-14. Although Chico’s Bernardez managed to score again, bringing the game to 23-20, it wasn’t enough to overcome O’Dowd’s relentless defense.
“Our defense stepped up when it mattered most,” said O’Dowd’s coach. “This win is a testament to our hard work and determination.”
With this victory, O’Dowd (10-4) is now set to face Christian-El Cajon for the state championship next week, aiming to replicate the success of their 2016 championship team. As excitement builds for the upcoming clash, fans are already buzzing about the potential for another title.
