UPDATE: Nahant officials are urgently advancing plans for a new public-safety building, which could unite the town’s police and fire stations under one roof. Town Administrator Alison Nieto announced critical developments today, emphasizing that the feasibility study is a top priority for the community.
The town has officially awarded a contract to Context Architecture, which emerged as the best contender among four proposals submitted. This decision was confirmed after a thorough review process, with work commencing in October 2023. “We are currently conducting a space-needs analysis and inspecting both the police and fire stations,” Nieto stated.
During their analysis, Context Architecture identified serious deficiencies in the existing facilities. “Both stations are in desperate need of renovation,” she highlighted, noting that holding cells at the police station do not comply with state regulations. The study aims to determine whether to renovate the current buildings, construct new ones, or create a combined facility.
Multiple potential sites for the new building have been evaluated, including locations adjacent to the Department of Public Works, behind the current police station, and near the Nahant Country Club. Notably, the existing fire station is situated in a flood zone, complicating its future usability.
“This process is vital for our community,” Nieto remarked, stressing the importance of creating a functional space for emergency services. Both Fire Chief Austin Antrim and Police Chief Timothy Furlong have been actively involved, participating in walkthroughs and contributing insights during the analysis phase.
The Town aims to finalize a comprehensive plan by the end of the study, with intentions to present findings at the upcoming Town Meeting. The urgency of this matter is clear, as the safety of Nahant residents hangs in the balance.
As the feasibility study progresses, residents and officials alike are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for potential changes to their public safety infrastructure. This initiative represents a significant step toward enhancing emergency services in Nahant.
Stay tuned for further updates as this critical project develops.
