UPDATE: The Nahant Planning Board held an urgent meeting on October 24, 2023, to discuss the safety of a proposed upgrade to the Crown Castle cell tower, stirring community concerns over potential health risks from electromagnetic fields (EMF). Experts and board members emphasized the necessity of a public hearing to address residents’ anxieties.
During the meeting, renowned RF Engineer Michael Lawton from Isotrope LLC provided crucial insights into the implications of the tower upgrade. This facility, located in a residential neighborhood behind the police station, has raised alarms among locals, with Board member Rob Steinberg noting “potential alarm in the community.”
Lawton pointed out that any upgrades could significantly alter EMF exposure levels, stating, “If this renovation is completed and carriers are added to the tower, it will absolutely change the result of the test.” The board is particularly concerned about the aggregate exposure from three carriers currently on the tower: T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon.
Lawton explained that AT&T would need to conduct an exposure study before proceeding with the upgrade, which he believes is essential for community safety. He confirmed that “there is a risk” if residents are exposed to EMFs, underscoring the importance of transparency and communication.
After an hour of detailed discussions, the board members floated the idea of organizing a public meeting to engage with Nahant residents directly. While no final decision was made, Lawton encouraged the initiative, saying, “I think a public hearing might be a good opportunity to let people talk and listen as well.”
In a pivotal moment, Lawton acknowledged that he personally wouldn’t have concerns if the proposal came before him, but reiterated the need for public input. The urgency of this meeting highlights the community’s growing unease regarding the safety of wireless infrastructure in their area.
Residents are urged to stay informed as further developments unfold. The Nahant Planning Board is expected to continue discussions and may schedule a public hearing in the coming weeks. Community engagement on this pressing issue is vital as Nahant navigates the balance between technological advancement and public health safety.
