URGENT UPDATE: A mother of two, Patricia Villa, was tragically shot and killed while working at a storage facility in Covina, California, on November 2, 2023, around 5 p.m. The alleged gunman, identified as Juan Nava, is now in police custody. This shocking incident has left family and friends reeling as they mourn the loss of a beloved partner and friend.
An emotional vigil was held Saturday, where hundreds gathered to honor Villa’s life. Her father, Frank Villa, expressed disbelief over the senseless violence, stating, “Patricia was a non-violent person… why did this have to happen to her?” Colleagues also described her as a dedicated employee and a bright light in the workplace.
The tragedy unfolded when a masked man, later identified as Nava, entered the facility just before closing time. Security footage shows him preparing for the act, putting on a mask and arming himself before approaching Villa. When family members could not reach her, they drove to the facility and discovered her lying inside, having been shot five times.
Authorities report that Nava was a customer and tenant at the facility who appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis. Following the shooting, police utilized facial recognition technology to identify and apprehend him. “They searched his house and found many arms, automatic weapons, side arms, pistols,” Frank Villa revealed.
As the community mourns, a GoFundMe page has been established to support Villa’s family during this devastating time. “I don’t know how anybody could even plan for something like this; it was just that random,” said Deann Pancheri, a coworker and friend.
Nava is currently held without bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for December 9, 2023. The Covina community is left grappling with the shock and grief from this violent act, emphasizing the urgent need for discussions around mental health and gun violence.
