Morgan County Sheriff Launches Urgent Scam Education for Seniors

URGENT UPDATE: The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office has just announced a critical series of scam education classes aimed at protecting older adults from rising fraud threats. Starting March 2, 2024, these sessions will be held at various senior centers across the county, providing essential training on how to identify and respond to prevalent scams.

Mike Swafford, the public information officer for the sheriff’s office, emphasizes the immediate need for these classes: “Educating the public is the best defense to help prevent more seniors from falling victim to the scams.” With many seniors increasingly targeted, this initiative is vital for community safety.

The classes will tackle the most common scams reported, including deceptive phone calls claiming warrants, missed jury duty notices, and urgent demands for bail or bond payments. Many of these scams originate from overseas call centers, complicating efforts to track down perpetrators or recover lost funds.

This series is not only free but also includes lunch for participants enrolled in the Senior Center Program, making it an accessible and valuable resource for the older population. Upcoming sessions are scheduled as follows:
– **March 2, 2024:** Hartselle Senior Center
– **March 10, 2024:** Lacey’s Spring Senior Center
– **March 24, 2024:** Somerville Senior Center
– **March 31, 2024:** Turner-Surles Senior Center
– **April 7, 2024:** Union Hill Senior Center

As these classes roll out, seniors and their families are urged to participate and stay informed. Engaging in these discussions can significantly enhance awareness and prevention strategies against scams that target vulnerable individuals.
