BREAKING: The Minnesota high school boys hockey tournament reaches a thrilling climax today as the top-seeded teams in both Class AA and Class A prepare to battle for state titles. At noon, Hibbing/Chisholm faces off against Warroad in the Class A championship, followed by Minnetonka taking on defending champions Moorhead at 7 p.m.
This is a pivotal moment for Hibbing/Chisholm, aiming for its first title as a co-op team. Historically, the Hibbing Bluejackets clinched championships in 1952 and 1973. Their recent semifinal victory was a nail-biter, with a 4-2 win over Mahtomedi. Conversely, the Warroad Warriors, boasting an impressive 26th state appearance, seek their fifth championship since the tournament’s inception in 1945. They previously triumphed in 2005 against Totino Grace.
In a twist, earlier this season, Hibbing/Chisholm defeated Warroad 4-2 on January 24, setting the stage for an electrifying rematch.
Meanwhile, in Class AA, Minnetonka, making its eighth tournament appearance, is on a quest for its third title after previous victories in 2018 and 2023. The Skippers needed overtime to edge past Rosemount 4-3 in the semifinals. They face Moorhead, who aims to defend their title and secure only their second championship in history, after finishing as runners-up eight times. The Spuds surged in their semifinal, scoring three goals in the third period for a 3-1 win over Edina.
Moorhead and Minnetonka previously clashed on December 20, with the Skippers taking that game 4-2.
