Mary Ingleby, Beloved Educator and Activist, Passes Away at 75

Born on June 22, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Mary was the third of six children in the Ingleby family. Her life was marked by resilience and a deep passion for nurturing young minds. At just sixteen, she faced the heart-wrenching decision to give up her first child for adoption, a pivotal moment that shaped her dedication to education.

Mary earned her Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College, going on to teach preschoolers for many years. Among her students was her second son, Damian Ingleby, who credits her influence for his lifelong love of reading and learning.

A devoted lover of the ocean, Mary made Santa Cruz her home for over 53 years. Her compassion extended beyond the classroom; she was a fierce advocate for animals and marginalized communities, dedicating her time and resources to various causes. Music was another cornerstone of her life; she actively participated in choirs and duos, filling her home with melodies that resonated with joy.

In a poignant turn, Mary later reunited with her first child, Bill, allowing them to forge a meaningful relationship before his untimely passing in his mid-30s. She is survived by her son, Damian, and her younger sister, Colette Ingleby.
