Library Foundation Launches New Bookstore in Mission Hills Today

UPDATE: The Library Foundation SD has just opened a new bookstore in Mission Hills, marking a significant addition to the local community and the independent bookstore movement. The grand opening took place earlier today at the corner of West Washington and Hawk streets, in the former location of the Mission Hills Public Library.

Patrick Stewart, CEO of Library Foundation SD, expressed enthusiasm about the new venture: “The Library Shop is excited to join the Mission Hills business community. We are proud to be part of the resurgence of independent bookstores in San Diego and around the U.S.” This bookstore aims to foster a love for reading while supporting all 37 library locations across San Diego.

The new shop not only offers a wide selection of new books but also features gifts for avid readers. This initiative comes as the city’s library system continues to evolve, with the original library moving approximately half a mile away to Washington and Front streets.

Councilman Stephen Whitburn, who represents Mission Hills, stated, “Turning the former Mission Hills Library into a bookshop and community gathering space is a win for this neighborhood.” He praised the Library Foundation SD and local residents for revitalizing this cherished community space.

The bookstore is particularly notable for its commitment to showcasing works by local authors, including a dedicated section for LGBTQ+ authors, aligning with the store’s close proximity to the historic “gayborhood” of Hillcrest. Additionally, the shop will feature banned books, supporting the foundation’s mission to combat censorship.

As a gathering space, Library Shop Mission Hills will host author events and speaking tours, enriching the community’s cultural landscape. The store’s opening represents a broader trend of revitalizing local bookstores across the United States, creating spaces for connection and creativity.

Library Foundation SD, a nonprofit organization, aims to strengthen communities by enhancing the San Diego Public Library system through philanthropy, advocacy, and outreach. Today’s launch is a critical step in that mission, providing a new hub for book lovers in the area.

As the bookstore begins its journey, it invites all San Diegans to come and show their support for libraries and local literature. Stay tuned for more updates on events and offerings as this new community resource unfolds.
