URGENT UPDATE: A 34-year-old man from Lake Charles, Louisiana, has been charged with the rape of an elementary school student, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office. The alarming incident was reported just last Friday when the victim confided in school staff about the abuse.
Authorities confirm that the victim disclosed to school personnel that Gerson A. Espinal had inappropriately touched her multiple times and raped her. In a troubling twist, it was later revealed that Carla M. Artiaga, 32, a family member of the victim, learned of the sexual assault but failed to report it to law enforcement.
Both Espinal and Artiaga were arrested and are currently being held at the Calcasieu Correctional Center. Espinal faces serious charges including first-degree rape and sexual battery against a victim under the age of 13, with a bond set at $500,000. Artiaga is charged with failure to report certain felonies, and her bond is set at $100,000. Additionally, both individuals are being held on immigration detainers by the Department of Homeland Security.
This case underscores the critical importance of reporting suspected abuse. Local authorities are urging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior, emphasizing that timely reporting can protect vulnerable children.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office further stated that the investigation is ongoing and encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward. As this case develops, the community watches closely, hoping for justice for the young victim.
