URGENT UPDATE: A man in La Mesa has been arrested after brandishing a knife and threatening police during a tense standoff on Saturday, August 12, 2025. The incident unfolded around 3:34 PM at an apartment complex on Comanche Drive, where officers responded to reports of a man swinging a knife dangerously close to an 11-year-old child.
According to the La Mesa Police Department, 34-year-old Peter DePrince allegedly made “veiled threats” about shooting at officers from his balcony as they arrived at the scene. The child and a female adult managed to escape the apartment prior to police intervention, having witnessed DePrince arming himself moments earlier.
Authorities swiftly evacuated surrounding units to ensure resident safety while the La Mesa Police Special Response Team and the San Diego Sheriff’s Emergency Negotiations Team were called in to assist. The situation escalated for nearly three hours before DePrince emerged from the apartment unarmed, leading to his arrest on charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Felony Child Endangerment.
The child was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital for evaluation but fortunately sustained no serious injuries during the ordeal. Following the medical check-up, the child is now in the care of a local family member.
