UPDATE: The Jingle Bell Dash in Kingston, N.Y. took place this morning, bringing together 40 runners in festive attire to raise an impressive $5,000 for the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center’s youth outreach programs. The event, held on December 9, 2023, kicked off from North Front Street and showcased a vibrant tour of Kingston’s historic Stockade District.
Participants braved chilly temperatures, with some opting for holiday-themed costumes while others showed their holiday spirit in more revealing outfits. Pre-race espresso martinis at Hotel Kinsley provided a much-needed boost against the cold. This year marks the second annual dash, following its inaugural run in 2022.
“This year’s turnout was double that of last year,” said Stephan Hengst, co-director of Big Gay Hudson Valley and an event organizer. “It’s fun, it’s goofy. It’s great visibility for the queer community,” he added, emphasizing the event’s mission to celebrate the holidays while supporting essential programs.
The funds raised are dedicated to the center’s “Gen Q” youth initiative, which provides critical support for LGBTQ+ youth. “We’re always here for young people who need someone to talk to,” said Richard Heyl de Ortiz, executive director of the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center. He highlighted the center’s ongoing school outreach efforts, aimed at assisting educators in supporting LGBTQ+ students.
In addition to fundraising, the event fosters community connections. The center also hosts a “Gen Z Drop-in” event, allowing LGBTQ+ youth to connect and share experiences. “Everyone participating today helped to raise funds to keep these programs going and to grow these programs,” Hengst noted, expressing hope for even greater participation next year.
Looking ahead, Hengst aims for a goal of 100 participants in future events. The enthusiastic atmosphere and community support signal a bright future for the Jingle Bell Dash.
